The Program is supporting the Gambian Reparations Commission to strengthen trauma-informed, survivor-centred approaches to engaging with victims and survivors, while also promoting the well-being of staff and stakeholders involved in the process.
The Gambian Reparations Commission plays a vital role in ensuring that victims and survivors of serious human rights violations are able to participate safely and meaningfully in reparative justice processes. Many individuals engaging with the Commission may have experienced torture, sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV), enforced disappearance, unlawful detention, or violations committed against them in childhood. These experiences often have profound and long-lasting psychological effects that influence memory, disclosure, trust, and engagement with justice mechanisms.
